7 Laws which Govern Increase & Order

7 Laws which Govern Increase & Order

I believe this year truly is going to be a year of significance.

I was introduced to a book a while back and this past month I reread it as I was reflecting on the past twelve months and looking into the new year. Now, this isn’t an infomercial that promises God’s blessing if you send in 19.95 to the number on the screen, but it does give universal laws that are applicable to everyone. These are the results of discovering what the Bible says abut increase and how to maintain order.

Some may be apprehensive because of feelings associated with the talk of prosperity. But did you know that God takes good pleasure to see success and increase in your life? Our church staff has been ruminating on that word significance, and specifically this year being one of significance.

God’s idea of success includes reproduction, increase, and multiplication. Which segues into the first of seven laws.

Below is an outline of what to expect from The 7 Laws which Govern Increase & Order.

·      The Law of the Seed

o   The seed must produce after its own kind.

o   You have to be given dominion in life.

o   You determine your own diet.

o   All things begin with the word.

o   We are creationists.

o   God’s ways are superior to ours.

o   The seed is the word.

·      The Law of Attraction

o   Be faithful in the few in order to attract more.

o   Understand God invests in proven abilities.

o   Operate now what you will be forced to operate when…

o   Faithfulness (or lack) attracts (or repels) promotion.

·      The Law of Hospitality

o   Your potential is released through hospitality.

o   Use the gifts you’ve received to serve others.

o   Release the anointing of hospitality.

o   Create an atmosphere of expectation with hospitality.

·      The Law of Reflex

o   Create systems of automatic response to needs.

o   Realize that growth causes problems, but reflex solves them.

o   Division is a process:

§  Murmuring

§  Strife

§  Evil work

§  Manipulation

§  Witchcraft-use of words or prayers against leaders

§  Rebellion

§  Division

o   Protect Your Purpose

·      The Law of Mutual Benefit

o   This law guarantees each party experiences increase.

o   Crisis can be opportunity that positions you for purpose.

o   God believes in the reward system.

o   The greatest temptation against your dream is comfort.

o   Nowhere in scripture are we told to take a leap of faith.

o   God is not hiding something from you, he’s hiding something for you.

·      The Law of Faith to Follow

o   Recruitment vs. Volunteerism

o   Faith vs. Need

o   Jesus doesn’t expect you to work on empty, he equips who he recruits.

o   Communicate in simple terms.

o   Authority flows through leadership.

·      The Law of Order

o   God is a God of order.

o   Excellence honors God.

o   Creativity flows from action.

o   We either create order or cause disorder.

o   Light is the transference of information.

Even though the book was written with the idea that these truths have been used in the arena of ministry, the 7 Laws are applicable to you. Just as the law of gravity works for everyone, the 7 Laws are universal in application.

The book ends with talking about the grace to grow. The idea of favor is broken down and turning dreams into reality. The author gives these 3 rules for walking on water:

1.     Make sure Jesus is calling you to step out.

2.     Don’t listen to those who stay in the boat.

3.     Once you’re walking on water, don’t consider the natural elements against you.

The key to accomplishing what God has equipped you to do is in having your confidence and significance base in Christ—not your own personal successes.

You may think, “You’ve just given the entire book in outline form. Why do I need the book!?”

Oh, but contrar, I’ve barely scratched the surface.

Biblical Preaching: A Book Review

Biblical Preaching: A Book Review

I’ve been exposed to Robinson's "Biblical Preaching" multiple times within my study of homiletics. I loved it the first time, and like a movie you see a second time there is more to pick up you didn't get the first time. But you can't go by that alone- I'm just enamored with the subject matter. Like watching a Spiderman movie, I didn't care that it was remade with different franchises within 2 decades. Spiderman is the best superhero imo so I say "Take my money!"(insert Futurama gif here). The same is true when talking about preaching, especially specifically expository preaching. The style I liken to gravitate towards could be labeled narrative expository, so a book like this is not just a text book but a guilty pleasure.

I usually consult my wife (she's a PhD candidate for Biblical Interpretation with an emphasis on Old Testament Theology) just to make sure I'm treating a certain text with proper hermeneutics and not teaching heresy. Remember folks its exegesis not eisegesis. The art and construction of the sermon is like magic to me. So even a book on the basics like Robinson's is exciting. Boiling a message down to its simplest point like Robinson touches on in chapter 2, or creating a pathway from the biblical text to the message you're writing for hearers in chapter 4, or the different shapes sermons take = all fantastic! I could sip a nonfat latte for hours and talk this over with an equally interested human.

But the part that really tickles my fancy is the final chapter "How to Preach So People Will Listen". To me, this is where the real magic lies. Content is important- very important. But having the right answers doesn't mean anything if you're not getting through to people's heart. The right info doesn't always equal life change. If that were the case every surgeon's warning on a pack of cancer sticks would be enough for everyone to immediately stop smoking. No, delivery often has everything to do with someone's inclination or their portal to be open for a time that's ripe for life change. Now, the Holy Spirit certainly does His job and can use anything- and does again and again. But that should be no excuse for us not to use our creativity and be expectantly ready. Everything from how you're dressed, to your facial expressions, to gestures, to vocal delivery, even down to your breathing. Also, whether or not you've allowed the passage to change your heart and life because people can smell that stuff a mile away you know. People can tell if you're not smoking what you're selling.

I love that he ends with the fact that we never arrive. All of us need all the help we can get (from God and others) - lifelong students becoming better and better.

You will never arrive.

There

is

always

more.

Your Calling

Your Calling

The Christmas story starts actually starts when two individuals are terrified when God speaks to them.

This couple Zachariah & Elizabeth were old (I believe the Bible says they were “advanced in years”).  Zachariah is a priest and while he’s working his shift an angel appears to him and he is terrified. The angel tells him that he and his wife are going to have a baby.

Understandably Zachariah doubts the Angel because he and Elizabeth are in fact “advanced in years” he can barely take a step without his leg cramping up.  Because of his unbelief he is stricken with silence.  He will be unable to speak until Elizabeth has the baby.

We are left in anticipation…

It’s been 6 months since Zachariah has said a word…

Meanwhile the angel visits a distant relative of theirs

A little girl in a small agricultural village called Nazareth…

26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin's name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one the Lord is with you!” 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be.  Luke 1:26-38

30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

Mary, you have nothing to fear. God has a calling for you: You will become pregnant and give birth to a son and call his name Jesus.

A 1980’s science fiction film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger tells the story of a cyborg from the future that is sent back in time to eliminate an young waitress, whose destined give birth to a son who will grow up and lead humanity in a movement against the machines.

A soldier who is also sent from the future protects the waitress.  He is a messenger sent to deliver her the news that her unborn son is going to be the one to save the world.

When she is told this information she says,

“Are you sure you have the right person?

Do I look like the mother of the future?

I’m not tough or organized? I can’t even balance my checkbook.”

She says, “Look I didn’t ask for this honor and I don’t want it, ANY OF IT!”

She is afraid of her calling.

Eventually she accepts this burden with glorious purpose.

Later her son (from the future) is quoted saying, “Thank you for your courage.  Remember the future is not set.  You must be stronger than you imagine you can be.  You must survive, or I will never exist.”

Gods calling on your life brings fear.

Whether it’s becoming a missionary overseas, starting a nonprofit, or picking up the phone to call an estranged loved one.

We are all born with 2 fears; Falling & Loud Noises.

All other fears are learned, which means they can be unlearned.

It takes Courage to accept God’s calling

Perfect Love casts out all fear.

People who live in fear never have good stories.

We’re called to live a life worthy of good stories.

Are you living a life worth telling stories about?

When we don’t overcome fear to live a story-worthy life, we rob God of the glory that rightfully belongs to him.

May your love for God be stronger than your fear of the unknown.

May you live a life worth telling stories about.

May you accept your part in changing the world.

May you accept God’s calling on your life.

Fanatics

Fanatics

I was in a Political Science class at UC Berkeley and the professor began by displaying his middle fingers to the class and said, “This is why I don’t like final exams either.” He explained that he tends to get calluses on the displayed fingers from all of the grading.

This particular class discussion was about religious violence. We talked about many different things including modern corruption, social constructionism and rational choice. The conversation became intriguing when we began talking about religious warriors.

Some people appear to be so obsessed with their interpretation of their religion it causes them to fly planes into buildings. I began to learn that these people aren’t crazies; I began to realize that this can happen to anyone of any faith.

Sometimes people go through internal struggles that lead them to make choices to prove they’re a true follower of [insert a religion or political stance].

Suicide bombers may have a low sense of self-confidence. When people have a low self-esteem, they feel the need to do something to esteem themselves, something that brings value to them.

So it would seem that even more important than someone adopting the “right beliefs” would be that a person adopts a view of him/herself that is reflective of God’s view of him/her. If a we don’t view ourselves the way that God views us, then our whole relationship to God is derailed and based off of a false pretense.

Everyone wants to feel significant.

Sometimes the fear of not being important drives people.

But love is a better motivator.

Sometimes people just want to feel alive—even if it kills them.

Remember who you are.

Suffering & Surfboards

Suffering & Surfboards

It was Spring Break. We had a great idea to take a road trip to Florida. My friends and I were looking forward to not having to think about exams, studying, gpa’s, and papers.

We were ready and fully intended on taking advantage of all that the southeastern tip of the connected United States had to offer. This included the ocean.

There was talk of some beaches that were so gorgeous it would be like being in a commercial for a Calvin Klein perfume. Water so clear you could see all the way to the bottom like waves of blue glass coming in and out. And mounds of tiny perfectly pure granules of white sand.

This seemed really nice for a kid like me, who previously lived in California right before coming to college, a place where beaches had dump truck loads of brown sand and ocean water that sometimes seemed brown as well with all the kelp and seaweed.

This over populated brown sand and Pacific Ocean is where I learned how to surf. I wasn’t really good but I was able to ride a wave.

One of my friends told me about this private beach in Florida that had glass water and white sand and so we went by ourselves to discover this magical land. It was beautiful I wanted so badly to surf it, the only problem is where we were in Florida, they didn’t have very big waves.

They don’t surf there they do something called skim boarding. It’s kind of like surfing but instead of paddling out on a 6’ board to wait for a wave to ride in- they have a small 45” board without fins called a skim board (sometimes called a potato chip). The idea is to run, throw the skim board down, jump on it and glide across the water's surface to meet an incoming wave and ride it back to shore.

What could go wrong?

After we had purchased our skim board we came to this deserted place of paradise and it was time to experience the Floridian way of catching waves. I remember being a little nervous while studying the motion of the ocean but when the time was right I ran out onto the wet sand chasing the leaving current I threw my board down and watched it glide before I jumped on top of it. I was probably on it for about 2.5 seconds before hitting something (probably a rock) which made the board stop but just as Sir Isaac Newton explains in his first law of motion known as inertia, just because the board stopped doesn’t mean I stopped.

My foot went forward, but my body fell backwards putting an extensive amount of pressure on my ankle. It happened so fast yet it felt like it was in slow motion. As I was falling to my back my ankle felt like a bundle of carrots or stalks of broccoli being snapped in half, there were 3 loud audible pops that echoed through the beach.

There was nothing about this moment that made me thankful or want to rejoice.

Paul has a different outlook on this.

Paul was a man who persecuted Christians until one day he became one. It was so genuine he started planting churches all over eastern Europe and Asia minor. Most of the new testament is made up of letters that Paul wrote to these churches that he planted.

The church at Colossae was planted by a man Apaphras (you can’t make this stuff up) who heard Paul speak in Ephesus and returned to his home to share this gospel that changed his life. This resulted in the birth of the church in Colossae.

Paul was under house arrest in Rome and Apaphras told him about a dangerous teaching that was threatening the church in Colossae. Even though we don’t know for sure we have a pretty good idea what this teaching is.

Most likely someone from within the church had attracted a following and was presenting himself as a Christian spiritual guide. This person probably claimed to have superior insight to Spirituality.

He would’ve taken parts of local Jewish beliefs: Sabbath, Jewish festivals and parts of pagan folk beliefs- calling on angels for help and protection from evil spirits. He would’ve encouraged the wearing of a magical stone amulet around their necks for protection from evil spirits.

When Paul hears of this teaching that devalues Christ and fails to appreciate the new identity of believers he writes this letter of warming and encouragement. He does not minimize the threat presented by the demonic powers but emphasizes the supremacy of Christ over all powers.

Paul says, “Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church, 25 of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known.”

“I’m going to punch you right in the throat!” This is a sentence my wife said to me this past weekend. Ericka and I take an annual ski trip with my best friend Sam and his fiancé Courtney. Last weekend we went to Christmas Mountain to hit the slopes. I live for this! Last year Ericka and Sam took turns falling down the mountain pretty much all day while Courtney and I take on Black Diamonds.

A weekend like this is filled with things that Ericka loathes… like skiing. At night after skiing is over we eat dinner and stay up half the night playing board games. My wife does not stay up late and she despises board games.

So, on this particular night it was already late and we were playing one of the board games our friends brought. This one was called taboo. You know the one where you have to get your partner to guess the word on your card without using the word itself or the other words listed on the card?

It was Ericka’s turn and I had the buzzer, you know the purple and turquoise device that sounds like a cartoonish electric razor? It’s probably one of the most annoying sounds in the world. When Ericka flips her card over and begins playing a game that she’s not too excited about in the first place… one of the words she says is listed in the ‘can’t say’ category.

And see my moment, my opportunity to shut down my opponent’s efforts to tread enemy territory with confidence, I stick the buzzer right next to her ear and push the button, “You can’t say that”. She stops looks at me and with conviction in her eyes says, “I’m gonna punch you right in the throat.”

I bust out laughing because of the ridiculousness of her reaction. But also, my heart is warmed at the thought I’m reminded of. She doesn’t like skiing, she doesn’t like staying up late, she doesn’t like board games and yet she is suffering right in the middle of all of this and she’s doing it for me.

In the middle of this very violent threat ironically, I’m reminded of just how much my wife loves me.

What is suffering? Is it really skiing and board games?

The greek word is Pathos, it’s a suffering is a pain that impacts your emotions and your identity.

God can be in our suffering and use it for our good and his glory.

When my vegetable-like ankle broke in half my friend ran over he said, “Holy cow! Your ankle is red and purple and the size of a softball!”

The nearest hospital was at least an hour away. He somehow picked me up and carried me all the way back to his jeep. I tore a piece of a towel and bit down on it because the pain seemed to be unbearable, and it stopped my from screaming.

The mom of the family we were staying with just happened to work for an orthopedic surgeon to whom I was rushed straight to for emergency surgery. They put 2 medal plates and 6 screws in to hold my ankle together

I stayed an extra week in Florida for the recovery. I was nursed on the recliner of the family I stayed with. I was heavily drugged. When I would wake up the dad (who worked as an undercover officer on the Bomb squad) would be sitting in an adjacent recliner watching reruns of COPS on tv. He would just look at me and smile, and I would drift back into sleep.

All I could recall when seeing him was a time earlier when he showed me all of his guns that were laid out on a table and when he was threatening to tase me while I was swimming in his pool, I was nervous that he really would.

Getting around was a challenge, even just to go to the bathroom. I got back to school and had crutches for 3 months and I lived in the top floor of my dormitory with no elevator.

Having a broken ankle made some things in life a little difficult. It created this sense of inconvenience and frustration.

Putting my pants on in the morning usually took all of about 3 seconds now it took 17. Putting my shoes on and tying them took 5 seconds now it took 11. I would show up to places 33 seconds late and I would just say (point to ankle).

Now a broken ankle compared to what a lot of you go through is not that big of a deal. But it had a profound effect on me because it caused me to think of people who suffer day after day, for years. My small pathetic injury caused me to sympathize with others. I felt like a small part of me could relate and it changed me.

Lots of people wear crosses, which is an execution device. One scholar says God came into the world and screamed along side us. Interesting picture God screaming along side us. When we go through suffering lots of times our first questions are often directed at the divine- “How could you!? You don’t know what it’s like!”

Perhaps the cross is God’s way of saying “Actually I do.”

“If only you walked a day in these shoes!” Is the cross God’s way of saying, “I have”?

The cross is God’s way of saying, “I know how you feel”

There is something in your suffering if you are willing to look for it.

Michelangelo after completing his masterpiece sculpture David said, “I saw the him in the marble and carved until I set him free.”

There is greatness in you. Courage. Desire. Integrity. Compassion. Love. It’s in there- somewhere. And sometimes it takes suffering to get at it.

We are going to suffer. And it is going to shape us. Somehow, we will become bitter or better, closed or open, more ignorant or more aware, more or less tuned into thousands of gifts we are surrounded with every single day. This will shape you… the only question is how?

Trying to get around with crutches changes you. It made me make closer to people when asking them to carry my books. It made me humble to ask for help.

It even had me sitting in the front row of the lecture hall which ultimately through a series of events led me to start dating Ericka. And we’ve been married for 8 years this year.

I keep surfboard hung on my wall in my office because it reminds me of how God brings beauty out of pain.

Suffering is the difference between the cross having done something for you and the cross having done something in you.

May your eyes be opened to the fact that God is in your suffering.

May you learn from all your surfboards.

May you see how God brings beauty out of pain.

Dead Canaries

Dead Canaries

How emotionally healthy is your leadership?

In Peter Scazzero’s book The Emotionally Healthy Leader he touches on emotional health affects your leadership both on the inside and on the outside.

Peter is a great writer for a book filled with systematic structure and practical application he does a nice job of telling stories to highlight his experiences in order to keep the literature interesting. He focuses the first half of the book on the interior because he knows the inside affects the outside.

The biggest take away is how the four inner life roots can be used to make emotionally healthy decisions. They are:

Face your shadow- The accumulation of untamed emotions, less than pure motives and thoughts that shape your behavior. The damaged but most hidden version of who you are. How might this be impacting decisions you are making? What wise counsel would minimize this?

Lead out of your marriage or singleness- What changes might I need to make in order to take into account the need for a healthy, vibrant marriage or singleness?

Slow down for loving union- On a scale of one to ten, what is the level of anxiety as I consider this decision? Have I prayed for prudence? Gathered all facts? Have I done the slow diligent work needed to listen for God’s whisperings about his definition of success?

Practice Sabbath delight- How will this decision affect our work-Sabbath rhythms?

Peter says that watching these four things is how he watches for the canaries.

Before tech Equipment gold and coal miners carried canaries (they are highly sensitive to poisonous gases) as a barometer of the air quality in the mines. Dangerous gases would accumulate and lead to devastating explosions.

The canaries would chirp and sing all day long but when the carbon monoxide levels rose too high, the canaries would stop singing. When the singing stopped the miners knew it was time to quickly leave the mine to avoid the explosion.

What are you decision-making canaries?

What are those small indications that something may not be right?

Angry Jesus

Angry Jesus

“Oh my God, what happened?”  I’ve heard this phrase come out of my mother’s mouth multiple times in my life. I think I hit the peak of hearing it when I was in college.  At one point it seemed that every time I called her it was to inform her that there was an accident – whether it was a broken ankle while surfing over spring break, a dislocated shoulder from snowboarding down the stairs, or a herniated disc from an auto accident days before graduation.

I think I first discovered that I was accident-prone when I was seven.  My dad had just told me to clean my room. I decided to start with the towering bookshelf in my room that reached for the ceiling. It easily was two of me.

So I started ripping everything off of the shelves that I could reach… and then realized the only way to clear the shelves that I couldn’t reach was… to climb.

I reached for a high shelf to grab with my hand as I placed my foot on a lower shelf.  Pulling all 50lbs of me I climbed to the top like Spiderman.  And as I started to clear off the very top the bookcase I noticed it started to rock, and wobble, and teeter…

And it lost its balance… and so did I.  I fell to the floor with my back against the carpet.  When I opened my eyes all that I could see was a monstrously tall dark wood construction picking up speed as it came crashing down onto my head.

My head broke the fall of a solid oak bookshelf.  My forehead split open… you could see my skull.  I was told there was quite a mess.  Ironic because what I desired was cleanliness.

God desires cleanliness too.  And ironically a long time ago that required a mess.  Back then the way to be clean was to make a mess.  A bloody mess.  One that you would alert the animal rights activists for.

You see, there weren’t always Christians.  Christian means ‘little Christ’ and Christ is not Jesus’ last name it’s his title.  Messiah, Son of God.  And so what about all the people who lived in B.C?

What about all the people who lived before Christ?

Before Jesus came people who chose to follow God were just “Children of God” or “followers of God” and in order to follow God you would follow the law also known as the Pentateuch, or the Torah.

The law is filled with the different ways to become clean, which was necessary for walking with God. One of these ways is by killing animals in place of yourself.  Because if there was sin, there had to be death.  God is the definition of perfection and to accept anything less than that is denying who he is.

If you had a glass of water and dropped even the smallest amount of gasoline in it.  It’s not drinkable because it has become contaminated.  Sin contaminates God.  God is pure and receives clean things. You become clean by making a bloody mess as an animal dies in your place.

You would buy or bring your animal to the place of worship.  This was called the Beit YHWH (translated as ‘House of God’) aka: the temple.

And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold, saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers.”

And he was teaching daily in the temple. The chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people were seeking to destroy him, but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were hanging on his words.

When Jesus reached Jerusalem there was a big party and it was called Passover.  This party brought between 300-400,000 people into Jerusalem.

And when Jesus entered the temple he began to “drive out” those who sold.  The Greek word is ekballo which means forcing to leave.  This is the same word used to describe Jesus driving out demons from the afflicted.  He used a scourge, which is like a whip used for punishment to drive out the sheep and oxen being sold for sacrifices.

He did this because the animals were being sold at outrageous prices. It’s kind of like when you go the movie theatre to see a movie and you’re forced to buy their bucket for $10.50.  Only a movie theatre can get away with that. And only the temple could get away with this.

When entering the temple you had to pay a tax and use the appropriate monies.  Much like the issue of pesos, eros, and the dollar.  When they exchanged currencies people were being cheated.   So Jesus knocked the moneychangers coins onto the floor and flipped their tables over. This is uncharacteristic of Jesus thus far.  Angry Jesus!? We don’t like Angry Jesus!

I think he was angry, but still in control.  I don’t think his pigment turned green and he hulked up and ripped right out of his man-dress.  I think he experienced controlled anger.

The temple was being used for something other than it was created for. Jesus drove out what contaminated the temple. He cleanses it.  Because Jesus cleansed where God dwelt. And Jesus cleanses where God dwells. Some people believe this old temple is being replaced by a new temple. The Bible explains that he’s building a new temple and we are it. God lives inside of all of us.

Do you ever feel like what you’re doing is something other than what you were created for?

Jesus cleansing the house of God has major implications of who Jesus is saying he is.  He’s claiming to have the authority to cleanse God’s house, he’s claiming to be God in the flesh.  He’s claiming to be the one that all these dead animals were killed for.

This would be the equivalent of someone marching into your workplace and claiming to be the expert at whatever you do and tell you that you don’t measure up.  In fact they were going to come in and take over because you weren’t good enough.

Some people don’t believe.  Some people choose not to believe.  Because when you’re faced with the offending reality, you have to make a choice as to how you will respond to it.

What will you do with your choice?

So my dad came rushing into my bedroom, he threw the bookshelf off of my head.  I couldn’t feel anything because I was in shock.  I could hear my mom, “Oh my God what happened?”

He wrapped me in a blanket as he ran next door to have a neighbor drive us to the hospital.  I barely remember climbing into that 1970’s light brown Buick.  The ER doctor took me right away into the operation room for stitches.

They put a sheet over my face with a hole exposing the wound.  As they started to stitch I asked my dad why they were sowing a sheet to my head.  The doctor laughed at my naive question.  Less than an hour later I walked out of the hospital looking like the spawn of Frankenstein with stitches on a diagonal across my forehead.

On the way home my dad asked me what I was doing climbing that bookshelf.  I told him that I was cleaning my room like he told me to.  He said,

“But there’s some things you just can’t do because you’re too little.  He said,

“I can see what you can’t see”

“I can reach what you can’t reach.”

“I would’ve helped you, all you had to do was ask.”

Different Generations

Different Generations

The news and media blamed Millennials for not taking the Covid 19 pandemic seriously claiming that they were headed towards beaches for Spring Break with no regard for staying home to help stop the spread of the virus.

Then I saw this post on social media…

Idiot Millennials” are not the group of bozos partying on the beach in Florida. That is actually Gen Z.

-Millennials are 25 -40 years old.
-We are at home in our daytime pajamas, waiting to switch into our nighttime pajamas.
-We are video conferencing while our pets run through the dining room with their raccoon toy flapping like a wind sock.
-We are on our sofas paying our student loan bills and googling “How do I Tik Tok?” in between threat texting our boomer parents to quit jacking around and stay at the house.
-We are doing virtual workouts and watching vegan health documentaries while eating premium cheese.
-We are quickly approaching 40 and struggle to stay awake past 10pm.
-Our backs and knees hurt when it rains.
-If we stand up too fast, we can severely sprain virtually any muscle in our body and be off from the gym for weeks to potentially months.
-Some of us are bald and most have indigestion.
-We have been social distancing for years.

We are not out partying, and we are def not on vacay with those young adults trying to bring back 90’s Steve Madden slides.”

LOL

When I saw this post my first thought was “YES! SPOT ON!” Then, my second thought was ‘How true- there is a large percent of people who may not understand generations. Generations are time stamped by birthdays (which don’t change). That doesn’t mean all young people are Millennials as a matter of fact it means at some point Millennials will be in the same age group as boomers are now.

A Millennial will never not be a Millennial. But a Millennial will someday not be a young adult because the stages of life will change.

Here’s a short rundown of Generations 101-the basics, give or take a couple years.

Baby Boomers

Born between 1944-1964 makes them roughly 56-76 years old in 2020. Boomers still have a cable bill, listen to the radio, and possibly read the newspaper because they’ve been doing these things for years, it’s shaped them. Most of them have a facebook account, prefer going to the bank to deposit or withdraw money and still carry cash.

Generation X

Born between 1965-1979 makes Xers roughly 41-55 years old in 2020. This MTV generation watch 165 hours of TV a month and 7 hours a week on facebook. Gen X is raising a family to pay debt and take care of their parents.

Millennials

Born between 1980-1994 makes Millennials roughly 26-40 years old in 2020. Millennials (also known as Generation Y) have cut the cable cord in favor of Netflix and other streaming services. They have multiple social media accounts, little patience for poor service, massive amount of student debt when entering the workforce. This debt delays purchases like weddings and homes causing preference to access over ownership (i.e. renting, Uber, etc.)

Zoomers

Born between 1995-2020 makes Gen Z 0-25 years old in 2020. They are heavy users of mobile devices, always known a country to be at war, and they try to avoid debt after seeing the struggle of Millennials. I’ve nicknamed Gen Z ‘Zoomers’ although they are more commonly known as Homelanders. They’ve grown up playing games on their parent’s tablet and spend an average of 3 hours a day on their phone.

There are certain things that make every generation special.

Learning from one another is how we help move our beautiful world forward.

No matter where you’re at on the chart may you see the world from someone else’s shoes.

Becoming a High Performer in your Workplace

Becoming a High Performer in your Workplace

Different is better than better.

It’s good to be better, but it’s better to be different.

Working hard to become better is working harder not smarter.

Don’t change who you are, become more of who you are.

There may be things you’ll never be good at, talents you’ll never have. Instead of investing energy in trying to acquire them invest it in what you are good at and the talents you do have to make them stronger.

Sometimes in marketing class professors will give the students a list of well-known brands and assign the students to write down next to the brand one word that describes that brand to them.

If you can summarize in one word exactly what makes a brand different, it makes it really easy to summarize in the consumer world.

The same is true not only for brands but for people.

People like you.

What is a High Performer?

·      High performers stand out from average performers in the organization.

·      They consistently exceed expectations, and are “go-to” people

How do High Performers Add Value?

·      They are admired for their noteworthy ability to contribute with a specific benefit.     (i.e. incredible attention to detail or great vision/big picture ideas)

·      They over deliver on this ONE specialty.

What is it that Top Performers Do Differently?

·      They focus exclusively on their highest advantage.

In the chart below Sally Hogshead (NY Times Bestselling Author of Fascinate and How the World Sees You) outlines the different personal brand archetypes by primary and secondary advantages. For $55 you can take a test revealing your primary and secondary personality advantages to find out where you land on the map.

Or if you’re like me… just guess.

How to Become a Better Online Presenter

How to Become a Better Online Presenter

With our current viral pandemic, it is globally shutting down lots of business forcing people to work from home. One of the biggest changes professionals are having to come to grips with is having meetings online as opposed to in-person. (Insert boomer joke here)

The truth is online meetings and presentations can be very helpful especially for a geographically scattered audience.

How can you be a better presenter via video conference with groups?

It seems impossible, right?

Jokes always fall flat, it’s hard to read the room, and you have about as much undivided attention as a 6th grade biology teacher.

But there is a way to sharpen your skills. 3 actually

·      Energy

·      Stories

·      Engagement

Amp up the Energy

First of all, come into the start of the video call with high energy greeting: smile be happy and loud. Say good morning and tell everyone how happy you are to be there.

Tell Stories

Compliment whoever is hosting the session. Maybe even tell a story about how you met.

If there’s a problem with connection tell a story to kill time instead of killing the energy with awkward silence.

Engage the Audience

Have the audience give people a round of applause (like IT or the admin staff).

Engage the people with a call and response. To get their participation in ask a question that’s not rhetorical, one that you want them to answer.

Bring a spouse or pet in for a cameo appearance.

Make it spontaneous and it will be authentic.

Form a bond with the people.

Build Authority with you audience

Tell us something that will establish your credibility.

Don’t brag but highlight something that will get us excited about hearing from you.

We’ve all had to change the way we work and engage in relationships. Becoming a better online presenter whether it’s through a Zoom call, FaceTime, or a Live event on a social media platform will build a more engaging interaction for you and for those you’re bringing your message to.
