The news and media blamed Millennials for not taking the Covid 19 pandemic seriously claiming that they were headed towards beaches for Spring Break with no regard for staying home to help stop the spread of the virus.

Then I saw this post on social media…

Idiot Millennials” are not the group of bozos partying on the beach in Florida. That is actually Gen Z.

-Millennials are 25 -40 years old.
-We are at home in our daytime pajamas, waiting to switch into our nighttime pajamas.
-We are video conferencing while our pets run through the dining room with their raccoon toy flapping like a wind sock.
-We are on our sofas paying our student loan bills and googling “How do I Tik Tok?” in between threat texting our boomer parents to quit jacking around and stay at the house.
-We are doing virtual workouts and watching vegan health documentaries while eating premium cheese.
-We are quickly approaching 40 and struggle to stay awake past 10pm.
-Our backs and knees hurt when it rains.
-If we stand up too fast, we can severely sprain virtually any muscle in our body and be off from the gym for weeks to potentially months.
-Some of us are bald and most have indigestion.
-We have been social distancing for years.

We are not out partying, and we are def not on vacay with those young adults trying to bring back 90’s Steve Madden slides.”

LOL

When I saw this post my first thought was “YES! SPOT ON!” Then, my second thought was ‘How true- there is a large percent of people who may not understand generations. Generations are time stamped by birthdays (which don’t change). That doesn’t mean all young people are Millennials as a matter of fact it means at some point Millennials will be in the same age group as boomers are now.

A Millennial will never not be a Millennial. But a Millennial will someday not be a young adult because the stages of life will change.

Here’s a short rundown of Generations 101-the basics, give or take a couple years.

Baby Boomers

Born between 1944-1964 makes them roughly 56-76 years old in 2020. Boomers still have a cable bill, listen to the radio, and possibly read the newspaper because they’ve been doing these things for years, it’s shaped them. Most of them have a facebook account, prefer going to the bank to deposit or withdraw money and still carry cash.

Generation X

Born between 1965-1979 makes Xers roughly 41-55 years old in 2020. This MTV generation watch 165 hours of TV a month and 7 hours a week on facebook. Gen X is raising a family to pay debt and take care of their parents.

Millennials

Born between 1980-1994 makes Millennials roughly 26-40 years old in 2020. Millennials (also known as Generation Y) have cut the cable cord in favor of Netflix and other streaming services. They have multiple social media accounts, little patience for poor service, massive amount of student debt when entering the workforce. This debt delays purchases like weddings and homes causing preference to access over ownership (i.e. renting, Uber, etc.)

Zoomers

Born between 1995-2020 makes Gen Z 0-25 years old in 2020. They are heavy users of mobile devices, always known a country to be at war, and they try to avoid debt after seeing the struggle of Millennials. I’ve nicknamed Gen Z ‘Zoomers’ although they are more commonly known as Homelanders. They’ve grown up playing games on their parent’s tablet and spend an average of 3 hours a day on their phone.

There are certain things that make every generation special.

Learning from one another is how we help move our beautiful world forward.

No matter where you’re at on the chart may you see the world from someone else’s shoes.
