Words Create Worlds
July 7th, 2010
The first chapter of the Bible is a poem. It starts with God creating things. The lines of the poem start with “and God said…” Whatever it is that God says he wants it just materializes out of nothing. God speaks some kind of word and somehow it appears.
Words create worlds.
When people say words, a whole new world of possibilities opens up. “You good for nothing!… Stupid!… Fag!…” Perhaps you were sent all kinds of damaging words as a child. Then maybe someone came along and spoke a word of viability over you. “You’re valuable… you matter… you are beautiful.” Someone’s words created a whole new world.
With every conversation we have, with every person we talk to, every dialogue, every word that we speak we have an opportunity to speak life or death. Without being a know-it-all, overly optimistic flake with no sense of reality we have a chance to breath life and hope into souls that ache with bitter pain. The Bible mentions the tongue 103 times. In James it says that the tongue is untamable and that it is a restless evil that’s full of deadly poison.
Think about that. God instructs us that no human has ever tamed the tongue. This is important because of the damage it can cause. Unable to rest or relax as a result of anxiety or boredom it embodies forces associated with the devil. And it projects a venom-substance that when absorbed by others causes death.
This is a very powerful device we have. And thats just it. If our words have the ability to cause so much pain, damage, and destruction; then it also has the ability to be equally life-giving. We just have to be intentional about using our tongue. We must not settle for whatever naturally fly’s out of our mouths. Instead we’re called to allow our God-fulfilled spirit to supernaturally touch someone else’s.
With everything that you say you cause either life or death. Because words create worlds.
The question is, what kind of world is it that you want to create?
